What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is based upon ideals such as treating the whole person, focusing on disease prevention and wellness, using natural healing modalities, including the food that we eat every day, to bring the body into balance, treating the cause of illness rather than the symptoms, and empowering patients in their own care through education. The best part about the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is that it attunes us to the laws of Nature; it sets us on a course for true healing and wellness. And when integrated fully into one's life its effects are profound and lasting. It is, in essence a spiritual tool."
About Dr. Kären van der Veer, ND
Dr. Kären van der Veer began her professional life as a visual artist, gallery director and dancer. In 1993, while fulfilling an artist residency at the University of New Mexico she made the decision to pursue a career in Medicine. She found that the principles of Naturopathic Medicine seemed "amazingly simple, just and profound" and were more in alignment with her own philosophies and intention than traditional allopathic medicine. Kären 's life is characterized by great passion and devotion. She maintains a great love for art, dance and music and has a long standing and avid interest in yoga and swimming: "the water is my liberation and, like yoga, has the ability to ground me, completely, in my body and breath. Too bad you can't do 'down dog' in the water." Currently, Dr. van der Veer works as a General Practice Physician providing a range of Naturopathic Therapeutics to her patients including acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutritional counseling. She is trained in counseling and known for her compassionate listening ear. Her other involvements include starting her own non-profit organization, the Medicine Tree, to provide the Hepatitis and HIV communities with Naturopathic treatment, education and research, and being "Mom" to an amazing son.
