It is never comfortable to be reminded of our mortality, especially in the tragic way we were reminded this past weekend. The Columbia disaster makes us all too aware of the short time we have to be together on this earth.

My dad raised us with two mantras that I try to live my life by... the first is Rule One: Have Fun, and the second - Leave the World in a Better Place Going Out Than It Was When You Came In. After the initial shock of hearing that the shuttle crashed, I spent the day listening to old interviews with the astronauts, stories about their dreams, their goals. In spite of the immense tragedy of their deaths, I felt such a strong sense of joy in their respective voices, a sense that they really were following Rule One and Having Fun, and that they were all certain that the world was, in fact, better because they were in it.

We all celebrate their integrity and their vision of a better world, and dedicate this issue to the spirit in which they gave their lives.

A security guard approached me...she was quite distraught and asked me if I heard what happened? Time came grinding to a halt. I knew something terrible had happened. And I knew before the security guard said a word that this moment would be one I would remember forever.

I was sitting in Mrs. Swing's 2nd Grade class when Principal Howlett announced that President Reagan had been shot. My father called me as I was standing in front of the bleached wood cabinet that held the TV to tell me that the Space Shuttle Challenger had exploded. I ate lunch in the 20th and Grand Apartment Building in Nashville watching CNN when the news anchor said, "There's just been an explosion in Oklahoma City." My business partner woke me up with a phone call on September 11, 2001 saying, "Just turn on the TV!...just turn it on right now!"

I will never forget when Stella the security guard told me last Saturday morning that the Space Shuttle Columbia "disintegrated." I'd venture to say that most Americans will always remember where they were when they received this news.

There are very few things that most of a nation's people have in common. These are the things that draw us together. Usually they are tragic.

We can all look up and view a new, sad, yet proud skyscraper in our collective city of dreams.

Yoga means to yoke, or unite.

Yoga is, ultimately, the art of relationships. It begins by cultivating the single most important relationship of your life, the one with yourself. From this relationship stems all others. Our yoga practice, then, becomes a daily opportunity to connect with ourselves, challenge our fears, let go of self-doubt and criticism and open our hearts to the beauty and perfection that already exists within.

Yoga, therefore, is the practice of integration. Through our diligent effort, we begin to release old thought and habit patterns. We start to cultivate healthier patterns. By reassembling the disconnected aspects of ourselves we work towards completion, a feeling of wholeness.

As we begin to nourish ourselves with acceptance, joy and love we become conscious. We grow sensitive to the way we interact with ourselves, each other and nature. Through the gift of yoga we begin to connect with all beings, all things. We begin to view all entities as an extension of our Self. We recognize that we belong to a community far greater than ourselves and we come to appreciate this simply by stepping onto our mats and connecting.
